A delicately infused Quince Gin
A beautifully simple quince gin recipe to make the most of this year’s abundance
Editorial Feature
Wrapped in wax paper and rich with the scent of the dairy it came from, artisan cheese feels like one of life’s enduring pleasures. It’s a food steeped in craft and care, quietly linking us to the makers and the land they work from.
This year, Leeds cheesemonger George & Joseph has given the festive countdown a decidedly savoury twist. Their new Limited Edition Cheese Advent Calendar brings together 24 of Britain’s finest artisan cheeses, carefully selected to be opened, savoured, and shared through December.
Founded by Stephen Fleming, who has spent more than a decade at the heart of Chapel Allerton’s food community, George & Joseph is known for championing British makers and shining a light on Yorkshire’s rich cheesemaking tradition. The new advent calendar marks twelve years of George & Joseph and it’s a fitting celebration of everything they stand for: craftsmanship, provenance, and the simple joy of good cheese.
Each calendar (£120) arrives in two chilled deliveries, with twelve individually wrapped cheeses in each box – a thoughtful touch that ensures everything reaches you in perfect condition. Expect a medley of textures and flavours: soft, blue, goat, crumbly, and nutty, with a few rare finds and festive specials tucked in for good measure. Among the confirmed stars are Pitchfork Cheddar, Baron Bigod, and Dorstone, with the rest kept secret to preserve a little mystery.
Stephen hints that fans will need to move quickly. “When we say limited, we mean limited,” he says. “We’re only producing forty of these calendars.”
Each portion comes with tasting notes, pairing ideas, and festive inspiration – the kind of thoughtful detail George & Joseph have become known for. Whether gifted to a fellow gourmand or enjoyed as your own December indulgence, it’s a delicious way to mark the days until Christmas.
The two deliveries will arrive on 28 November and 12 December, with free UK delivery included.

At this time of year, when the days draw in and kitchens fill with the comfort of slow cooking, my weekends typically include roasted potatoes.
